2012 Honored Alumni and Alumnus of the Year Announced

Since 1947, the Alumni Association has given out Honored Alumni awards and an Alumnus of the Year award. When choosing Honored Alumni, we look at contributions to medical education, medical missionary pursuits, medical research, community service, government and military service, support of the goals and objectives of the School of Medicine of Loma Linda University, and support of the Alumni Association. This year we selected six alumni to honor: Janesta Janzen ’62; Pierce Moore, Jr., ’44-B; George Petti, Jr., ’62; Weldon Schumacher ’62; David Small ’62; and Larry Thomas ’74. When choosing the Alumnus or Alumna of the Year, we not only use the same selection criteria as the Honored Alumni, we also look for a major contribution or accomplishment in the field of medicine or the humanities which brings credit to his or her profession, school, and church. Only one person is selected for this award each year. We are excited to announce that Richard Hart ’70 was selected as the 2012 Alumnus of the Year. Hubert Watkins ’62 Receives 2012 Iner Sheld-Ritchie Presidential Award

In 2004, the Alumni Association created an award to recognize individuals who embody the mission and vision of the Alumni Association, School of Medicine of Loma Linda University—the Iner Sheld-Ritchie Presidential Award. This year’s awardee, Hubert Watkins ‘62, is not only an individual of exemplary character and compassion but also a "self-appointed" ambassador for the Alumni Association whether it be on the golf course, on the ski slopes of Mammoth or on a cruise ship. Over the years, he has served as president of the Alumni Association, chair of the Holding Fund, chair of the APC Governing Board, chair of the Alumni Fund, and a member of the board of directors of the Alumni Association and the Strategic Planning Committee. He has also represented the Alumni Association on the Loma Linda University board of directors. It was our pleasure to present Watkins with this year’s award at the 80th APC Gala on March 5.
