The Alumni Association, School of Medicine of Loma Linda University is a nonprofit organization composed of both alumni and affiliate members, organized to support the School, to promote excellence in world-wide health care, and to serve its members.

Burton A. Briggs '66. After medical school graduation, anesthesiologist Burton Briggs took a residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, and then served in the military at the Dewitt Army Hospital in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He has spent much of his career teaching at Loma Linda School of Medicine as a professor of both anesthesiology and surgery, as well as working at the Loma Linda University Medical Center. George D. Chonkich '60. Following his time in medical school at Loma Linda, George Chonkich did an otolaryngology residency at NYU-Bellevue Hospital. He was most interested in head and neck cancer and thyroid surgery, and returned to Loma Linda as part of the surgery department at Loma Linda University Medical Center to help start the otolaryngology residency program. He currently works at the Loma Linda Veterans Administration Hospital. Lloyd A. Dayes '59. Lloyd Dayes went from his medical school experience in Loma Linda to Montreal where he completed a rotating internship, a residency in general surgery, a neuropathology fellowship, and a neurological surgery residency. Currently he is a professor of neurosurgery at Loma Linda University School of Medicine. He also serves as a staff member at Loma Linda University Medical Center, Riverside General Hospital, and Redlands Community Hospital. James R. Dunn '55. Before medical school, James Dunn had joined the army and been with a group that landed on Normandy Beach 20 days after D-Day. After he completed medical school and his internship at Porter Memorial Hospital, Dr. Dunn moved on to begin a family practice medicine in Grand Junction, Colorado. From there he began a ministry 225 miles away at the La Vida Mission, flying out every other Wednesday for clinic. He retired in 1996. H. Roger Hadley '74. H. Roger Hadley earned his MD degree only five years after graduating high school, then moved on to a residency in surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center. He also completed a urology residency, and a fellowship in female urology and urodynamics at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has worked as a professor for Loma LInda University and currently serves as Dean of the School of Medicine. Richard K. Hamamura '60. Following his internship at White Memorial Hospital, and before his residency at Loma Linda University School of Medicine and fellowship at Stanford, Richard Hamamura served in the U.S. Army. He spent most of his career in Loma Linda, working on the anesthesiology staff and teaching as a faculty member. Dr. Hamamura helped create the Outpatient Surgery Center and was a member of the Loma Linda Heart Team. He retired in 2006. Jeffrey C. Kuhlman '87. Between college and medical school, Captain Jeffrey Kuhlman received his military commission from the United States Navy. After medical school, Captain Kuhlman did a family medicine residency at Loma Linda University Medical Center. He is triple board-certified in Aerospace, Family, and Occupational Medicine, and currently serves as physician to President Obama, as director of the White House Medical Unit, and as Chief White House Physician. John J. Ruffing, Jr. '60. John Ruffing has spent nearly 50  years as a family practice physician to the people of Hemingford, Nebraska. He interned at the Hinsdale Sanitarium. Dr. Ruffing is passionate about education, and has taught physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and EMTs. He helped the State of Nebraska develop uniform ambulance equipment and procedures, and has also been active in smoking cessation education. Charles A. Sims '60. During his residency at Santa Clara Medical Center in San Jose, Charles Sims focused on anatomic and clinical pathology. He has also studied cytogenetics, hemoglobinopathies, and radiation physics. He is the medical director and co-founder of California Cryobank, the first independent semen bank in the State of California. For over twenty years he worked as the medical director and Chief of Pathology at Century City Hospital in Los Angeles. Claude E. Steen, Jr. '44-B. When he completed his internship and residency at the Orange County Hospital, Claude Steen entered the U.S. Army where he reached the rank of captain before he was honorably discharged. He next moved to Ethiopia where he started a hospital in Gimbie and served there for five years before going to serve in Addis Ababa for six more years. He returned to the United States and set up a family medicine practice in North Carolina until he retired in 1989. Alumnus of the Year Jasper Wayne McFarland '39
