Stanley W. Galli painting commissioned by E.R. Squibb & Sons

Just after the medical center was built, a pharmaceutical company called E.R. Squibb & Sons commissioned artist Stanley W. Galli to paint American medical schools. The project showed Squibb's thankfulness for medical education in the United States.

"Loma Linda University School of Medicine" by Stanley W. Galli

The painting was reproduced and given to alumni. The original was given to Loma Linda.

With each copy given to alumni, this note accompanied the painting: "E.R. Squibb & Sons is pleased to send you this reproduction of a painting of your medical school, the Loma Linda University School of Medicine. We hope that it will renew many fond memories of the place where some of the most eventful years of your early life were spent.

The original painting was presented to Loma Linda on January 17, 1968, and was accepted by Dean David B. Hinshaw on behalf of the school.

Squibb commissioned the well-known artist Stanley W. Galli to create this painting of the Medical Center. Both the painting and its formal presentation to Loma Linda are part of a continuing program undertaken by E.R. Squibb & Sons to individually honor each of America's fine medical schools.

E.R. Squibb & Sons welcomes the Loma Linda University School of Medicine to its collection of paintings of American's medical schools. Squibb is honored to dedicate this painting to the college and to every graduate."

A letter from Dean Hinshaw also accompanied each painting reproduction: "Dear Fellow Alumni: E.R. Squibb & Sons has recently inaugurated a unique program as an expression of their appreciation for the contributions made by the medical colleges of America. Each school will be presented an oil painting of an appropriate building on its campus. At Loma Linda the University Hospital and Medical Center building was selected, representing as it does a very significant landmark in the development of the medical school. You will also be interested to note a portion of the University Church appearing in a corner of the picture.

"The Squibb organization has been kind enough to have reproductions of the original painting made for distribution to alumni, faculty and students and such a copy is enclosed. A large number of distinguished faculty, alumni, administration, student representatives, representatives of various medical organizations, and friends of the School attended the formal presentation of the painting which was made on January 17, 1968.

"With kind regards and best wishes for a productive and happy career in medicine I am, very sincerely yours, David B. Hinshaw, M.D. Dean"
