from the Preface . . .
Loma Linda University has developed a rich legacy in its Department of Orthopaedic Surgery during the past eight years, and it is fitting that the history be documented at this tme.
There are many who worked with the three in the department who had great influence during the first sixty years-Dr. G. Mosser Taylor, Dr. Alonzo J. Neufeld and Dr. Vernon L. Nickel. Dr. Claran Jesse was able to share his experiences with these men and also his memories with their predecessors such as Drs. Gallant, Spiers, Risser and Wilson.
Family members were able to recall the stories that bring meaning to their lives. Before his death in 1997, Dr. Carroll Small took the time to write his remembrances of those who touched the lives of his family members.
With the help of Drs. Philip Reiswig, Gary Frykman, William Bunnell, George Wiesseman, Virchel Wood and others, we have been able to document much of the progress in the department during the past decade. It is hoped that this effort to record the heritage of the important work that has been done by so many will be a challenge and an inspiration to others.
